Hit $12k in unexpected plumbing costs on a 1950s ABQ house...
I bought a house near the North Valley last year and thought a simple re-pipe would be like $4k tops. After the first inspection, they found the old galvanized steel lines had basically rusted shut in three spots. Then we hit cast iron drain pipes that were cracked under the slab, and that alone added $5k more. By the time we swapped out the water heater and added a softener loop, we were at $12,100 total. Has anyone else had a ABQ house from the 50s turn into a money pit like this?

Feel your pain, old houses are a total gamble with hidden surprises.

Wait, did they find a hidden pool under there too?

Hidden pool? Man, they'd be lucky to find a working drain under there at this point. All those renovations always uncover something weird like old plumbing or a weird stain that used to be a rug. Plus half the time these dramatic reveals turn out to be way less cool than the post makes it sound. People love to hype up a moldy basement corner like it's a secret speakeasy or something.
