I don't get the hype about open shelving in kitchens
Everyone in this group seems to love ripping out upper cabinets for open shelves, but I just redid my kitchen 8 months ago and went the opposite way. I put in solid shaker cabinets all the way up to the ceiling, and it cost me $3,200 total. The dust and grease from my cooking alone would make open shelves look terrible in a week. Has anyone else stuck with traditional cabinets and regretted not following the trend?

Makes you wonder if he's counting the cost of just the boxes and doors without the countertops, sink, or appliances. Real talk, a decent countertop alone runs more than that around here. Or maybe he lives somewhere where wood is basically free because there's a sawmill down the street. Either way, at that price point I'm guessing the cabinets are particle board with a thin veneer that'll start peeling in a couple years. But hey, not my kitchen, not my problem.

Stared at "$3,200 total" for a solid 30 seconds. Around here a single sheet of nice plywood is pushing $80 now. Did you find a time machine or just know a guy who knows a guy? I spent almost double that on just the hardware for my shaker cabinets.

Wait, you're telling me your hardware alone cost more than his entire kitchen? Like the screws and hinges and drawer slides cost more than all the wood and labor he spent?
I mean, maybe he used that pink OSB with the weird wax coating for everything and just painted over it. Or maybe he found a guy who trades in lumber futures and got it at 1990s prices. Either way, $3,200 for a whole kitchen sounds like the kind of deal that would have me triple checking for a 6 in front of that number.
