The tile guy on the Rio Rancho job roasted my grout lines and he was right
He looked at my bathroom floor and asked if I was doing a mosaic or a subway tile pattern, and I had 3/16 inch lines wandering all over the place. Got a better spacer setup and slower mud and my last job in Corrales came out dead straight. What spacing do you all run for 12x24 floor tile?
Used to run 1/8 inch on everything because that's what the old timer showed me and I figured tighter was cleaner. Then a guy on a big plank job set me straight: 12x24 has a lot of length to wander, so a slightly wider joint gives you room to correct and still look tight from standing height. Been running 3/16 on the long side and 1/8 on the short with the leveling clips, and it's way more forgiving on floors that aren't dead flat. Grout color hides a lot too, light grout on light tile will make those lines look straighter than they are.
Man, I feel this one in my knees. I spent years fighting tight joints thinking it was the mark of a real pro, and all it got me was lippage and a sore back from chasing lines that would not stay put. @adamr14 is dead on about the 12x24 wandering, there's just too much length on those planks to keep everything locked at 1/8 and not pay for it somewhere. Sounds like you went through some rough ones before that big plank guy set you straight and I feel for that, nothing worse than redoing work because nobody told you sooner. The grout color trick is real too, I learned that one the hard way after sweating a floor that looked fine once the grout went in.
