My 2am air fryer caught fire and I just stared at it for 10 seconds
So it's like 12:40am on a Tuesday and I'm making frozen mozzarella sticks in an air fryer I got from a neighbor's yard sale on Elm Street for $15. The thing starts smoking, then a real flame pops out of the vent, and instead of unplugging it I just stood there watching like it was a campfire. I finally killed the power and tossed a lid on it, and now the whole kitchen smells like burnt plastic and I'm scared to plug it back in. Did I wreck it, or is this just a thing that happens with grease and old baskets?
Did you have the little tray thing in the bottom? My mom had the same scare with hers, except it was tater tots and she was half asleep so she just yelled for my dad instead of doing anything. Turned out the heating coil was caked in old grease from like a year of use and the tray was warped so stuff kept dripping down onto it. She soaked the whole basket in hot water and dish soap overnight, scrubbed the coil part with a toothbrush, and it's been fine since. If it's a yard sale one, maybe start with a good deep clean before you give up on it.
