That "weatherproof" outdoor outlet cover at my sister's place near Portland

I spent almost two hours trying to get a supposedly weatherproof outdoor outlet cover to actually seal properly. Took me until 1:30 AM to realize the gasket was just slightly too thick and the screws just could not compress it down enough. Has anyone else dealt with those Leviton brand covers being a pain to close all the way?

Man that's frustrating... did you try shaving down the gasket a little with a razor blade or did you just give up and zip-tie it shut like I would've?

Heard some dude on a podcast say you can heat the gasket with a hair dryer to soften it up before trimming, makes it way easier to get a clean cut without it tearing. I tried that on a old fridge gasket once and it actually worked pretty good, though I still ended up with a couple spots where I had to superglue a corner down. Idk, zip-ties are probably faster if you just want to get back to drinking beer and watching the game. Never tried that myself though, maybe it's just me but I worry about pinching the seal too tight.
