The moon was out at 2am and I finally saw why my star photos kept coming out soft
I was out on my back porch around 2am last Tuesday with my camera and noticed the moon looked weirdly orange. That got me reading, and I found out the soft focus in my star photos was never my lens at all, it was haze low in the air bending the light, which is also why the moon goes that color near the horizon. I went through about 40 old shots from last summer and sure enough, the sharp ones were all taken after the haze cleared out around 3am. Turns out a cheap $12 haze filter chart online (just a printout you hold up to the sky) would have saved me months of blaming my gear. Now I check a weather app before I even grab the tripod. Did anyone else spend ages fixing the wrong thing before figuring out it was just the air acting up?
