My french press screen blew out, took 3 stores to find the right fix

The mesh screen on my big french press finally ripped last Tuesday. First store only had replacement carafes, second one sold me a filter that was 2 mm too small. Third store in Portland had a generic screen that fit my 8 cup model. Total time wasted: 2 hours driving around. Anyone else ever try to replace just the screen instead of buying a whole new press?
