PSA: Iced coffee after 3pm gave me a 2-day sleep hangover
I used to just pour my afternoon brew over ice and call it a day. Last Tuesday I did that with a cold brew at 3:30pm and didn't fall asleep until 4am. Switching to hot coffee with a splash of cream and cutting my caffeine dose to half a cup after 2pm fixed it completely. My rule now is anything after 3pm gets decaf, no exceptions, even on weekends. Took me three rough mornings to connect the dots, but now I keep a little decaf bag just for late afternoon cravings. Anyone else have a cutoff time that saves their sleep, or am I just getting old?
Have you tried just accepting that some people can't do afternoon caffeine anymore? I hit that wall around 32 and it’s brutal. My cutoff is noon now, and even that’s pushing it some days. The half-cup trick works for me too, but honestly the decaf switch is the real lifesaver. Once I started treating 3pm like a hard stop, my sleep got way better, it’s just not worth the two-day fog anymore.
The half-cup trick is interesting, @ray_miller84, but how do you handle the days when you really need the boost, like after a bad night's sleep? Do you just power through the fog, or have you found something else that works on those days? I'm asking because I keep thinking about switching my cutoff to noon, but the fear of hitting a total crash around 2 or 3 makes me hold onto that 1pm cup. That said, the two-day fog you mentioned is real, and I'm tired of playing that game with myself. Maybe I need to treat the cutoff like a hard rule instead of a suggestion, like you said, but I'm curious if you ever miss that late afternoon energy enough to cheat.
