I gave up on my air fryer after the smoke alarm went off, then a neighbor in Tulsa changed my mind
Back in October I was making frozen sweet potato fries in my air fryer and set off the smoke alarm in my apartment. There was grease pooled under the basket from a chicken thigh I'd done the night before and I hadn't scrubbed it out. I unplugged the thing, put it in the closet, and told my husband it was a gimmick. Two Sundays later my neighbor Dana in Tulsa asked why I wasn't using mine and said the trick is a splash of water in the bottom drawer under the basket so drippings don't burn. I brought it back out, cleaned the coil and basket with a soft brush and dish soap, and tried her tip with a batch of drumsticks at 380. No smoke at all, and the skin came out way crispier than my oven ever got it. Now I line the bottom drawer with foil too and swap it every time. Does anyone else use the water trick, or do you line the whole bottom with foil?
