Chasing a ghost fuel leak for 3 days, turned out to be a seal I swore was fine

Last week on a Cessna 172, I had a weepy fuel drain that ate my whole Friday and most of Saturday. I pulled the drain valve, replaced the O-ring, torqued it to spec, still leaked. Ended up draining the tank and finding a hairline crack in the fuel strainer housing that only showed under pressure. Took 26 hours total because I refused to believe the housing was bad, it looked perfectly smooth. Has anyone else had a part fail that looked flawless but had a hidden crack, and how long did you chase it before trusting the dye test?
