Got called out for my torque wrench technique on a Cessna 172 job

I was working on a Cessna 172's alternator bracket at a small field in Ohio. An older mechanic, who I just met, watched me pull the torque wrench and said, 'Kid, you're pulling from the middle of the handle. You're gonna get a bad reading.' I argued that it was fine, the manual just gives the value. He showed me his own wrench and pointed to the tiny print near the adjustment knob that said 'apply force here'. I was pulling from the center, which can throw the calibration off by a decent amount. I changed my grip that day, making sure my hand is right on the marked spot. It felt weird at first, but now it's just habit. Has anyone else had a basic tool technique corrected years into their career?
