Rant: fuel tank sealer vs new tank, I went cheap and paid for it

I had a Cessna 172 with a weeping fuel tank leak near the wing root last March, and the quote for a new tank was $3,800, so I tried one of those SLICK products to coat the inside instead. It stopped the drip for about 2 weeks, then the sealer started flaking off and clogged the fuel strainer on a runup at KPDK. Has anyone else had luck with the re-seal route, or am I just the idiot who should've bought the new tank?
