Saw a control cable fray on a Cessna 172 last Wednesday, caught it just in time

I was doing a preflight inspection on this 172 that came in for a 100 hour check. Pulled the throttle back and felt this tiny catch, like a snag. Got my flashlight and looked closer, and sure enough three strands of the cable were snapped right where it goes through the pulley. Must have been rubbing for months. Had my A&P buddy double check it and we ordered a replacement right there. Anyone else ever find a hidden cable failure that wasn't obvious from a quick look?

It's always the stuff you barely notice that ends up being the real problem down the road.

So true! Those tiny little things always sneak up on you later!

Honestly, that's like finding a crack in your favorite coffee mug right before it explodes.
