Spent two hours looking for a missing 10mm socket in a Cessna 172's engine bay

Tbh, I was sure it fell into the cowling somewhere after a routine oil change last Tuesday. I even got a mirror on a stick and a magnet, crawling all over the hangar floor. The new guy, Mark, walks over, looks at my toolbox, and just points at the socket holder. It was right there in the empty spot, labeled '10mm', the whole time. I felt like a total rookie. Anyone else have a moment where the tool was literally right in front of you?

That "mirror on a stick and a magnet" hunt is the worst. It's like your brain just refuses to see the obvious spot. Did you at least give Mark a hard time for showing you up?

I read a study once that said your brain can filter out stuff you're not expecting to see. It's like a real life glitch.
