Tried torque wrenches vs old-school feel for wheel retorques on Airbus A320s

I read a Eurocopter study once that said torquing errors in helicopters dropped by something like 60% after switching to digital torque wrenches... that stuck with me. With the A320, there's just too much at stake to leave it to how something "feels" in your hand. One guy's "snug" is another guy's overtightened mess, especially after a long shift. But I get the nostalgia for the old feel, it's like a mechanic's sixth sense or something. Still, when you're dealing with those landing gear bolts, I'd rather have a number on a screen than a memory of how it felt ten years ago.

Well now, that's a really interesting comparison. It reminds me of how things have changed in so many areas of life, not just on the flight line. People used to know their tools and their machines by touch and sound, but now everything has to be measured and recorded and documented. There's something to be said for the old feel, sure, but in a job like aircraft maintenance, you really do need that paper trail and that certainty. It makes you wonder where else we've traded that human touch for a readout and a printout.
