Blew a fuse in a crawlspace, learned to check power first

I was swapping a motion sensor in a house in Fresno and the whole panel went dead, turned out the old wiring had a shared neutral with the HVAC blower. Took me 45 minutes and a voltmeter to figure out I should've isolated the circuit before touching anything, has anyone else had a panel fight back like that?
