Reading an old trade magazine, I saw that a 1990s cellular backup unit for alarms cost over $2,000 to install.

Found it in a stack of 'Security Sales' magazines from 1995 at a flea market, which really puts today's $50 cellular modules into perspective.

Oh please, that old gear was built like a tank. You got a dedicated box with real copper and hardened components, not some flimsy chip on a board. That two grand bought you a unit that lasted twenty years in a dusty attic. Today's fifty dollar module will fry in a power surge and leave your system dead. You always get what you pay for.

My old ISP modem from 2003 finally died last year. I opened it up and the whole thing was a solid metal cage inside, like armor. The new plastic box they sent feels like a toy. But here's the thing, I put the new one on a cheap surge protector strip. It's been fine for three years now, even with our bad power. You HAVE to protect the cheap stuff because they don't build in that safety anymore.

Guess @wendyprice misses paying her phone bill in 1995 dollars.
