Update: spent 6 months mounting contacts on the hinge side because of one door in a Dallas high rise
I always put recessed contacts on the hinge side out of habit from my first shop, until a property manager in Dallas made me stand there while she opened her door and showed me the gap was wide enough to see daylight. Turns out her door was warped, the switch never made contact, and the panel logged it as open every time the AC kicked on. How do you all figure out which side to mount on before you start drilling?
Had a similar thing happen years back where a warped frame on an old warehouse door had me chasing a ghost for a week before I figured out the gap was the culprit. Now I just grab a flashlight and check the gap from both sides before the drill comes out, saves a lot of grief.
