A grain mill repair that took 6 weekends and a trip to three hardware stores

I bought a hand crank grain mill from a flea market in Portland for 12 dollars. It looked fine but the grinding plates were way off. Every attempt to adjust them made the flour grittier. I tried ordering replacement parts online, but the model was too old. Last weekend I finally took the plates to a machine shop and they resurfaced them for 35 bucks. Now it works perfectly. Why did I wait so long to just ask a professional? Has anyone else fixed an old tool by giving up and paying someone else?
