Almost ruined my grandfather's chisels because of a stupid choice

Had to pick between using a cheap $10 bench grinder from Harbor Freight or doing it all by hand with wet stones. I went with the grinder and it took off way too much metal on my 60-year-old chisel in about 3 seconds flat. Now I'm spending 2 hours fixing the bevel on a stone. Has anyone else wrecked a tool by taking the fast way out?

You ever try dunking the chisel in water every couple seconds while you grind... keeps the heat down and saves the temper. I learned that one the hard way too.

I disagree, sometimes a grinder just needs a light touch.

Light touch on a grinder that fast? How'd you not toast the temper on a chisel that old? What speed were you running it at?
