I finally tried hand-whittling on my lunch breaks and after 5 days I had a spoon
Three weeks ago I found my grandpa's old pocket knife in a shoebox and decided to actually use it instead of letting it rust. I grabbed a scrap of basswood from the craft store for $4 and started carving during my 30 minute lunch break at the bar, just sitting on the back steps. Day one I mostly made wood chips and cut my thumb. By day five I had a lumpy spoon that actually scoops chili. The trick was going slow and never cutting toward my hand, which I learned the hard way. Now I keep the knife and a small block in my apron pocket for slow afternoons. Has anyone else tried whittling? What kind of wood holds up best for a total beginner?
Five days to make a spoon that scoops chili sounds like a fair trade for one sliced thumb, all things considered. Basswood is pretty forgiving for a beginner, but if you want something that won't dent every time it hits the bowl, give birch or maple a shot once you're feeling brave. Just keep cutting away from your fingers, since the knife already got its one taste of blood.
