Journaling with a cheap Bic pen beats any fancy fountain pen I've tried

I spent $60 on a fountain pen set last year and the ink bled through every page. My $2 Bic writes cleaner and I don't worry about losing it. Anyone else find expensive gear makes the hobby worse?

Honestly, that $60 set sounds like a total rip off. I bought a 12 pack of Bic Cristals for like 5 bucks at the grocery store and they work perfect for my daily notes. Ngl, I get the appeal of fancy gear but it always ends up being more trouble than it's worth when the ink smears or the pen skips. I'd rather just get the cheap stuff and not stress about it getting wrecked in my bag. You're not alone on this one.

That's the same thing happening everywhere now. People pushing expensive stuff like it's the only way to do something right. Saw it with coffee machines, watches, even frying pans. It's a whole mindset now - if it costs more, it must be better. But a $5 pen writes just fine for most people. Same with a $20 notebook or a $15 pair of sneakers. The stress of worrying about ruining something fancy isn't worth it.

I read somewhere that the whole fountain pen thing is mostly about ritual and status, not actually writing better. Same reason people spend $100 on a notebook when a spiral works fine. If it makes you anxious or your notes look worse, the cost can't fix that.
