My grandpa's lathe advice about sharp tools actually paid off yesterday

My grandpa always told me to sharpen before I start, not after I get frustrated. I ignored that for like 3 months and fought with a dull gouge on some oak in my garage in Dayton. Yesterday I finally took 20 minutes to touch up the edge with a diamond plate, and the cuts came out so smooth it felt like cheating. The wood didn't tear out, my arms didn't ache, and I finished a bowl in one sitting instead of three. Has anyone else had a stubborn moment where they refused to believe some old-timer's tip? What finally made you try it their way?
