My kitchen scale died mid-bake and I had to wing it with a coffee mug

I was in my kitchen last Sunday making bread and my scale just shut off at 200 grams of flour. Had to switch to measuring cups but realized I only had a random mug from a gas station in Ohio. Somehow the loaf came out okay but now I always keep a backup measuring set in the drawer. Anyone else ever had a tool fail right in the middle of a recipe?

My mom's meat thermometer exploded in a turkey once.

300 degrees and a bang in the kitchen, @oscarhart that must have been a mess to clean up.

I remember reading about this on a food safety blog once. Apparently some older meat thermometers have a liquid inside that can expand and burst if they get too hot. The blogger said it's more common than people think, especially with those cheap glass ones that aren't oven safe. I think your mom probably hit the glass limit or got it too close to the heating element. Sounds like a nightmare to clean up all that glass and turkey juice lol.
