My leather craft knife roll fell apart halfway through a craft fair in Austin

I spent two months tooling a custom knife roll for a market stall I booked in Austin last month. Second hour into the fair, the stitching on the spine just let go and all six blades dropped onto the concrete floor. No one was hurt but I was mortified, and I had to pull my display for about 45 minutes to patch it with waxed thread and a spare needle I thankfully packed. The seller next to me kept saying "at least it didn't hit your foot," which was cold comfort. That led me to ditch the double needle saddle stitch pattern I learned from a YouTube video and go back to a simple backstitch on my next roll, even though it takes 30 percent longer. I tested it by loading it and bouncing it on my workbench about 100 times before I trust it again. Has anyone else had a handmade carry piece fail at the worst possible public moment? What backup did you use on the spot?
