Old timer at the farmer's market was wrong about carbon steel pans

Last month in Austin, this guy running a cast iron booth told me to never use soap on my carbon steel skillet, said it would strip the seasoning. I followed his advice for 3 weeks and the thing got sticky and rusty in spots. Then my sister, who cooks professionally, told me soap is fine as long as you dry it on the stove and oil it after. Tried that and the pan works better than ever. So who's right here, do you trust the old school method or modern advice?

Hell no, soap is fine on carbon steel. Old timer was just stuck in his ways.
