Overheard my nephew call my old film camera 'a weird box'

He's 8 and had never seen one before, just pointed at it on my shelf. I told him it takes pictures but you have to wait a week to see them. His face was pure confusion, lol. It got me thinking about how the waiting was half the fun with my first camera, a Pentax K1000. Anyone else have a hobby where the slow part is actually the best bit?

Totally agree with @faith_king about the developing being the best part. That whole process, from loading the film in the dark to the final wash, made you feel connected to the photo in a way a phone screen never can. It wasn't just a delayed reward, it was a physical thing you made with your hands. You had to get it right in the camera because you couldn't just delete and start over. That limitation made you a better photographer, honestly. Kids today get instant results, but they miss that deep satisfaction of creating something tangible step by step.

Remember that smell of the chemicals in the darkroom? The red light, watching the image slowly come up in the tray. It felt like magic every single time. Do you think kids today miss out on that kind of delayed reward, where you have to work for the result?
