Paid $90 for a leatherworking kit, the punch set bent on the third hole

I got into leather crafting after seeing some wallet posts online. Figured I'd start with a decent kit, not the cheap stuff. Spent 90 bucks on this set from a shop in Portland, seemed solid in the box. Third project, making a belt, and the rotary punch just bent right at the pivot. The leather wasn't even that thick, 8 ounce veg tan. Customer service said I hit a hidden hard spot, but I've since borrowed a friend's old punch and it goes through like butter. Anyone else get burned by a flashy starter kit that couldn't handle real use?
