Spent $60 on a vintage hand plane and it changed my whole approach to jointing boards

Whoa, isn't a hand plane more for smoothing than jointing though?

Actually a #5 can pull double duty if you set it up right. I've jointed plenty of boards with a smoother and a shooting board, works fine if your technique is decent. People get too hung up on having exactly the right plane for every job.

Ha, you got me there @roberts95! I've definitely tried to joint a board with a smoothing plane before and ended up with a nice, flat... wavy surface. Should've just grabbed the jointer plane like a normal person.
