Thought journaling was just for writers but it fixed my anxiety

I always saw journaling as something for people who like to write. Not me. But after my dad passed 8 months ago my brain was a mess. Started doing 5 minutes every morning with a pen and paper. Now I can actually sleep through the night. Has anyone else had a hobby they wrote off turn out to be the thing they needed?

wait but did you find it hard to stick with it at first or did it just click right away? i feel like i'd give up after three days.

Is it like that for you with most new habits too? I think it depends on how big the change is. If I try to overhaul something massive all at once, yeah I crash out in a few days. But if I just do a tiny piece of it, like 5 minutes a day, it sticks way better. Weird how that works, like our brains hate big changes but are okay with tiny ones.

The tiny habit thing is real. I tried to journal for 30 minutes at night once and quit after day two. It felt like homework. But five minutes in the morning with no pressure to write anything good? That's manageable. Same thing happened when I tried to get into running. I went all out and hated it. Then I started with just putting my sneakers on every day and walking to the mailbox. Eventually I was doing a mile without even thinking about it. Your brain really does trick itself into building momentum when you lower the bar that low.
