Warning: my fountain pen cleaning routine was ruining my nibs for months before I figured it out

Used to soak everything in tap water overnight, but after I moved to Austin last spring the hard water left mineral deposits that made my fine nib scratchy like sandpaper, now I use distilled water and a quick soak only 10 minutes tops - anyone else dealt with water quality wrecking their pens?

Isn't it funny how we don't think about something as simple as water until it starts ruining our stuff? It's kind of like how I never paid attention to my tap water until it wrecked my coffee maker, then suddenly it's the enemy.

Did the same thing happen to mine last month. Nothing like a layer of white gunk in your morning coffee to make you suddenly care a lot about what's coming out of the tap.
