Am I the only one who thinks stand developing is a shortcut that hides bad exposure?
I shot a roll of HP5 at a friend's wedding in Baltimore last month, souped it in Rodinal at 1:100 for an hour with no agitation, and got flat, muddy frames I couldn't fix, which is what happens when you lean on stand development to rescue sloppy metering. People keep saying stand dev is forgiving, but forgiving and correct are two different things, and I think we should be honest about which one we're doing. Is it a real tool for tricky light, or just a way to avoid learning how your meter reads a backlit subject?
