Chose a $15 vintage lens over a $150 modern one, no regrets

I had to pick between a beat-up 50mm f/1.8 from the 80s and a newer plastic kit lens for my Canon AE-1. Took the old one because the aperture ring felt nicer, even with all the dust inside. First roll came back and the soft glow on portraits was exactly what I wanted, my friend even asked what filter I used. Plus fixing the sticky focus ring only took 20 minutes with some lighter fluid. Has anyone else gambled on cheaper old glass and been surprised?
