DAE get told to stand further back from your subject and it ruined your shot?

A buddy at the camera shop in Portland told me to always back up at least 6 feet for portraits with my Pentax 67 to avoid distortion. I tried it on a whole roll of my niece's birthday party and everyone came out looking tiny in a giant room of balloons. Now I'm wondering if that advice only works for certain lenses or distances. Anyone else get specific advice that totally flopped for their setup?

Six feet back for a whole birthday party? That's wild, that advice is meant for headshots on a 50mm not a whole room of kids.

Good lord that's some bad advice for a party. I heard from a vintage camera guy that the 6 feet rule is for avoiding nose distortion on a 105mm or something like that, not for general shooting. Yeah @felix_black is right on the money, that tip is way too specific for what you were trying to do. You gotta think about what you're actually capturing not just a number someone throws at you.
