Home developing compared to the local lab, day and night after 6 rolls
I finally got tired of driving 40 minutes to the lab in Minneapolis every time I shot a roll, so I bought the basic kit and tried developing at home for the first time last Sunday. I did 6 rolls of Ilford HP5 over two days, and honestly the difference is huge, not just in cost but in control. My first two came out a bit flat because I didn't agitate enough, but by the fourth roll I got the hang of the timing and the negatives looked sharper than anything the lab gave me. The lab always overdeveloped my shots and crushed the shadows, but now I can stop the film at exactly the contrast I want. I spent about $95 on the starter chemicals and a tank, which is like 8 lab runs in my area, so it already paid off. Has anyone else switched and found their negatives have more detail, or am I just fooling myself with my own processing? What temps do you all use for the developer when it's cold outside in the basement?
