Local shop owner swore by vinegar for fixing sticky shutters. Big mistake.

Went to a small camera repair guy in Portland last month. He said soak the shutter blades in white vinegar to break up old grease. Sounded weird but he had 40 years in the biz so I tried it. Worked for about 3 days. Then the shutter started dragging worse than before. Vinegar left a film that gummed everything up. Took it to a proper repair place. They had to strip the whole shutter assembly and re-lube it. Cost me $180. Should have just paid $220 upfront for a real CLA. Anyone else get burned by homebrew cleaning methods?

Vinegar's for salad dressing, not precision camera parts.
