Crunchyroll subtitles vs fansubs, I switched after 5 years

I used to watch everything through a specific fansub group, the ones that put translator notes top of screen. Then Crunchyroll got the license for a show I followed, and I gave it a fair shot for a while. What changed was the quality of jokes, the fansub kept the wordplay and explained the cultural bits. The official version flattened everything to plain English, no context, no flavor. I remembered watching a comedy scene on both and the punchline just died on Crunchyroll. Now I check official first for the clean video, but if the show is comedy or historical, I hunt for the old fansub. Has anyone else felt the official subs get too sterile for some genres? What do you do when the licensed version loses that translator personality? Maybe I'm just stuck in my ways, but I can't be the only one who noticed this in the last few years.
