Finally changing my mind about dub vs sub after 8 years of anime

I used to be one of those people who would never touch a dub. Like I’d argue with anyone who said they watched English voices, telling them they were missing out on the real performances. But last week I started Attack on Titan with my younger cousin who has trouble reading subtitles fast, and I gave the dub a real chance for the first time. The voice actor for Eren actually killed it during those angry scenes, and Mikasa sounded way more emotional than I expected. I noticed a lot of fans online trash dubs without ever listening to the whole thing, they just repeat what they heard from others. Now I feel like I was being snobby for no reason, especially since not everyone can keep up with subs. Has anyone else switched sides on this after actually giving the other version a fair shot?

Dubs get way too much hate without people actually listening to them. AoT's English cast proves good dubbing exists when studios put in real effort. Gatekeeping voice preferences is just dumb when different people need different options.

the_xena said "gatekeeping voice preferences is just dumb" and honestly, are we really acting like this is some huge social justice issue now? i've seen people get way more worked up over dubs vs subs than the actual anime they're watching. it's just voice acting, not a moral stance. if your friend wants to watch the dub while his wife sleeps, let him be. who cares if it's not the "original" version? it's a couch, it's late, and he's probably just trying not to wake her up. people act like choosing a dub is a crime against art, but half the time it's just about convenience or bad hearing. take it from me, i've watched both and lived to tell the tale - no one needs to get their blood pressure up over this.
