18 episodes of padding and flashbacks before anything happens in One Piece. I get that the story pays off later but asking someone to sit through a whole season of TV before it gets good is a big ask. Most people don't have that kind of time anymore with all the other shows out there. It's like recommending a restaurant but saying the food is great after you eat the first five appetizers. I dropped Naruto three times before I finally got to the Chunin Exams and even then I skipped half the filler.

I mean, you're not wrong about the 18 episodes thing. That first arc in One Piece is brutal if you're not already hooked. I've seen people recommend skipping straight to episode 37 or wherever Arlong Park starts, but that feels like cheating to me. It's like skipping the first chapter of a book because the author hasn't found their voice yet. Maybe it's just me but if a show can't grab you in the first few hours, it's not your fault for dropping it. Naruto's filler is its own special kind of nightmare too.
