I finally realized I was skipping the best part of anime discussions

For years I would dive into the "Best Fight Scenes" or "Top 10 Villains" posts and just scroll past the long threads about character growth or pacing. Then last month someone on the Evangelion rewatch thread pointed out that the real debate is always in the subtext not the surface level stuff. Now I make myself read through at least 20 replies before I post and it has totally changed how I think about shows like Steins;Gate and From the New World. Has anyone else found they were missing the point by jumping straight to the popular topics?

Wait @josephmartin ever get stuck in a conversation about how the traffic lights downtown are timed all wrong? That's what anime debates feel like now, I find myself reading ten replies just to figure out if someone's talking about the show or the sub.

My buddy Alex used to speed through every discussion thread like it was a race. He'd post his take on the best fight in like five seconds. Then one day he got roasted in a Fate/Zero thread for missing a huge theme about sacrifice and he finally slowed down. Now he texts me all excited about the little details he catches. You ever have one of those moments where you realize you were basically watching with your brain on autopilot?

Agreed @josephmartin, I totally missed Kiritsugu's whole deal first time too.
