I finally saw how wrong my anime take was after a rewatch

I was rewatching 'Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood' for the third time, and I realized I'd been missing a huge point. For years, I kept telling people the show was just about cool fights and alchemy rules. This time, a line from episode 42, where Ed says 'A lesson without pain is meaningless,' hit me different. I was so focused on the action I ignored all the character growth and themes. Has anyone else had a show change for you on a later watch?

That line from Ed is a good example, but it's actually from episode 19, not 42. It's when he's talking to Rose after Liore. The show is packed with those quiet moments that get lost behind the big battles. My first watch I totally missed how Mustang's whole drive is about his guilt for Hughes and the Ishvalan War. It's easy to just see the flame alchemy and not the person using it.

My buddy cried when Mustang visited Hughes' grave, @elizabeths51.

Totally get that. Happened to me with 'Cowboy Bebop'. First time was just a cool space show. Second watch, all the sadness hit me. What show did that for you?
