I wasted $85 on a limited edition bluray set that arrived scratched
Ordered the special edition of Violet Evergarden from a third party seller. Box looked fine. Discs were wrecked. Two of them skip in the middle of episode 8. Seller won't take returns. Anyone else get burned on 'new' anime discs that were clearly used?

Oh man, "clearly used" is right. I had a similar thing happen with a Steins;Gate box set (ugh, the original, not the movie). Got it from a seller who claimed it was "like new" and the discs were all scratched up too, skipped right in the middle of the most dramatic part. I just ended up leaving a bad review and calling it a lesson learned, you know?

Wait, did you actually sit through the skipping part trying to see if it would fix itself? I've done that way too many times with scratched discs, just staring at the screen hoping it's a temporary glitch. @rubyshah that's actually a solid tip about contacting the studio directly, I never would've thought of that. But honestly after getting burned a couple times I just started buying everything from big stores with easy return policies, even if it costs a bit more. My collection is full of these "lesson learned" stories, it's like a rite of passage for any anime fan at this point.

Check if the outer box has a manufacturer seal that's been tampered with - some third party sellers buy damaged returns from other stores, repackage them, and sell them as "limited edition" without ever opening the discs themselves. If the seal looks legit but the discs are wrecked, it could be a factory defect that the distributor actually does cover under warranty, just not through the seller. Reach out to the anime studio's support team directly with pics of the box and discs, they've replaced stuff for me before when sellers ghosted.
