Just realized Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood isn't actually overrated
I used to roll my eyes at people calling it perfect, but a guy at a comic shop in Akron broke down the politics of Ishval for 20 minutes and suddenly I got what he meant. Has anyone else had their mind changed by a random stranger explaining a show?

That "guy at a comic shop broke down the politics of Ishval for 20 minutes" bit got me. I had the same thing happen when a coworker explained the whole homunculus thing as a metaphor for war crimes, and suddenly the show clicked in a way it never had before. It's funny how one person just laying it out straight can flip your whole view of something you thought you already understood.

Three episodes in both times it happened to me. First with Fullmetal Alchemist and later with Evangelion, some buddy just sat me down and walked through the whole thing like a roadmap with the signs already lit up. It totally works because you stop trying to figure out the deeper meaning yourself and just let the story breathe with the context they gave you. Keep that person close if you can, they're basically a living subtitle track for the stuff the show assumes you already know.
