My cousin in Tulsa pushed me into subs not dubs for FMA Brotherhood, and 12 episodes in I owe him an apology
I started Fullmetal Alchemist Brotherhood back in March and my cousin kept telling me to watch it with subtitles because the Japanese voices fit the brothers better. I ignored him for the first 8 episodes because I hate reading while watching. Then episode 10 hit and I switched over just to see, and wow, the dub Edward sounded like a totally different kid. I went back and rewatched episodes 1 through 9 in subs over two nights. Now I want to know, does the sub vs dub thing matter more for newer shows or is it just a case by case thing for everyone?
Yeah the case by case thing is real but I'd add that the studio and the era matter a lot too. Older dubs from the 90s and early 2000s had way less money and direction behind them, so subs were often the safer bet, but these days some dubs are honestly just as good since they put real effort into the casting. The thing with Brotherhood is that the sub cast had been doing those characters for years by that point, so they knew them inside out, and that stuff shows up in small ways you can't fake. Newer shows get better dubs on average but it still comes down to who's directing and whether the voice actually fits the character, so your cousin's rule of thumb works more often than not.
