PSA: I gave Attack on Titan one more shot last month and still think the first 8 episodes are a slog, the basement reveal does not fix the pacing
Everyone told me the payoff makes the slow start worth it, but I sat through the whole Trost arc in two sittings, and honestly it still felt like 6 episodes of Eren yelling while the actual plot waited in line, so what am I missing that made it click for you?

Man, the Trost arc really does drag if the show hasn't hooked you yet, so you're not crazy for feeling that way. Six episodes of Eren screaming while Armin has an existential crisis every five minutes is a lot to ask of anyone. What got me through it was mostly the mystery stuff, like the titans in the walls and Eren's dad's basement, because that kept me curious even when the action felt slow. The character moments with people like Jean and Marco are what actually landed for me early on, more than the big fights. But if none of that grabbed you, then yeah, the basement payoff isn't some magic fix that makes the first half retroactively better.
