Rewatched the first episode of Neon Genesis Evangelion with my friend who's new to anime
He said the giant robot stuff was cool but got super confused by Shinji's dad being such a jerk right away. I learned you really need to prep people for the heavy character drama in that show. What's a better 'first episode' to show someone to get them into that series?

Saw a video once where someone said to start with episode 8, the Jet Alone episode. It's got some action and humor, but the real messed up family stuff hasn't fully boiled over yet. Gives a better feel for the show's tone without the immediate psychological gut punch.

Honestly, that "heavy character drama" is the whole point, so maybe just start with a different show.
