Sat through a whole anime club argument about whether subs or dubs are 'real' anime

I was at a friend's place last night and this guy would not let up about how anyone who watches dubs isn't a real fan. He kept quoting some YouTuber's video from 3 years ago like it was gospel. I get that some people prefer subs but gatekeeping how others enjoy their shows is so exhausting. Has anyone else run into these purists who think their way is the only way?

Oh man, I've met that guy at like every con I've been to. I mean, I watch both depending on the show, but acting like one is "real" anime is just silly. It's all the same show at the end of the day, just pick what makes you happy and let others do the same.

Nah, @roberts95, you're wrong on this one. Dub fans straight up miss half the show. The voice acting in sub is just better, period. Cowboy Bebop dub is decent but try watching Attack on Titan dubbed. Eren sounds like a whiny kid. Japanese VA brings the raw emotion that gets lost in translation. Sub is real anime, dub is just a product. Pick a side.
