Sub-only elitists at my anime club missed a key dub detail

Last week a member ranted about dub accuracy, so I pulled up episode 4 of Space Dandy where the English script fixed a pun the sub straight-up dropped, and the room went quiet for five seconds, has anyone else caught a dub change that actually beat the source?

Wait, so the room went quiet because they actually had to sit there and process that the dub did something smarter than the sub, or because they were embarrassed they got called out? That's the real question here, because I've seen that exact silence happen both ways. The sub purists in my group will literally freeze up like a deer in headlights whenever you show them a localization that adds context instead of just translating word for word. But then they'll turn around and say the dub is "too loose" without ever admitting that sometimes a straight translation loses the joke entirely. So which was it in your club, people actually reconsidering their stance or just mad they got caught with their anime glasses off?
