That old guy at the anime club who hated subbed anime

I used to go to a small anime club at the local library about 2 years ago. One guy, must have been in his 60s, would show up every week with a DVD set of Cowboy Bebop but only the dubbed version. He told me once that reading subtitles ruined the art, and he'd rather miss a line than watch the screen the whole time. Has anyone else run into someone with a weirdly strong opinion like that at a meetup?

Read an article saying that same guy backed the surveillance bill from a few years back. Pretty sure that's the one everyone hated.

Yeah, I read something about that surveillance bill too. I'm not gonna lie, I looked it up after seeing the other comment and it's kind of wild to think a guy just there to watch cartoons could have those kinds of views. I get where Hannah's coming from a little bit, I've met people who swear by dubs because they can't stand looking away from the action. But from what I've heard, that bill was a real mess, and it makes me wonder if he was just a stubborn guy all around or if he really thought about what he was backing. Your mileage may vary, but it feels like there's a pattern there with him shutting out anything he doesn't want to deal with.
