That week I binged Sailor Moon Crystal and did a total 180 on magical girl shows

I used to think magical girl anime were just fluff for little kids, no offense to anyone who likes em. Last month I had a lousy week where my concrete truck got stuck in the mud on a job in Richmond, and I was stuck waiting around for a tow. My buddy threw on Sailor Moon Crystal on his laptop in the truck cab, and I figured why not, nothing else to do. By episode 8 I was actually invested in Usagi's growth and the whole destiny thing, and now I'm halfway through the original 90s series too. Has anyone else here had a show completely flip their opinion on a whole genre like that?

Same thing happened to me with sports anime after a buddy made me watch Haikyuu during a rain delay at a ball game. That show completely wrecked my 'it's just sweaty dudes jumping around' take.

Three days into a family road trip I watched all of K-On with my niece and had the exact same experience with slice of life anime. It's funny how being stuck somewhere with nothing better to do can crack open a door you never even thought to knock on. Kinda makes you wonder how many other good things we pass by just because we had a lazy first impression.

Is it really that deep though? I mean, I get that you had a moment where you saw something different, but calling it a full 180 on a whole genre because you liked one show seems kind of dramatic. Like if I watched a good episode of a soap opera, I still wouldn't say I get soap operas now. Sailor Moon Crystal is still basically a pretty straightforward action show with glitter, not some mind-blowing art piece.
